No. 17 Lady Cougars split Monday home tennis action

The Barton County Community College women's tennis team split a pair of home matchups Monday.   In the morning action held at the Ellinwood Tennis Courts, the No. 17 Lady Cougars took on the nation's No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College Lady Saints managing a victory at the No. 3 doubles but falling 8-1 in the Jayhawk Conference opener.  Returning to Great Bend's Veterans Memorial Park tennis courts for the afternoon matches, the Lady Cougars took care of Iowa Central Community College 4-0 as the first-year Tritons did not compete a full squad.   The day's action leaves the Lady Cougars at 4-6 on the year headed into this weekend's Seminole State College Dual Match Invite held at the Oklahoma Tennis Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The doubles matches began the day with Seward County dominating the duos with Jenna Groene and Shai Cartmill coming the closet but falling 8-4 to Tadi Mrewa and Madison Hoelting.  Neus Torregrosa and Idah Longwe lost the No. 1 match vs Thalita Rodrigues and Lisa Suzuki 8-3 with the Lady Cougars Julia Ramalho and Juliana Seabra dropping the No. 2 match 8-2 to the Lady Saints' Sarah Manseri and Steffany Bermudez.

Barton did manage one victory in the nine matches of the day as Longwe came through with the No. 4 singles victory in a marathon 6-2, 6-7(6), 11-9, victory over Mrewa.  No. 30 ranked Torregrosa nearly pulled the upset in the No. 1 singles match over the No. 9 ranked Rodrigues falling in the third 10-5 after dropping the first in a hard fought 6-4 loss but taking the second set 6-2.  The Lady Cougars took straight set losses in the rest of the singles matches as No. 49 ranked Ramalho lost 6-1, 6-2, to No. 46 ranked Manseri in the No. 2 singles matchup with Seabra losing the No. 3 match 7-5, 6-1, to Martina Borges.  No. 5 and No. 6 singles players Groene and Cartmill didn't quite fare as well managing just one game victory against Fernanda Santana and Hoelting.

Barton concluded the long day with an abbreviated dual with Iowa Central, defeating the Tritons in the four matches played.  Torregrosa and Longwe got the match going with an 8-3 win over Katheryne Campos and Chiaki Masuda in the lone doubles match.

Torregrosa handled Campos in the No. 1 singles match with a 6-0 twin shutout with Ramalho earning the victory at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Masuda.  Longwe rounded out the Barton sweep with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Lily Timmerman.

Barton will be the No. 7 seed in the SSC Duals this weekend, getting matched up with Seward County for the second time in the week as the two Jayhawk foes get things started at 9:00 a.m. Friday.  The winner will advance to the 3:00 p.m. semifinal match against the winner of third seeded No. 9 ranked Seminole State versus sixth seeded No. 15 ranked North Central Texas, while the loser of the matches will play in the 12:30 p.m. consolation match.
