The Barton Community College women's soccer team scored two first half goals Tuesday to hold on for a 2-1 victory at Dodge City Community College.
Receiving votes for the second straight week, the tenth straight victory improves the Cougars to 11-2-1 on the year and more importantly keeps Barton in the conference driver's seat at 10-0-1 with three games remaining. Dodge City drops to the conference .500 mark at 5-5-0 while falling to 6-7-1 on the year. Barton's next action is Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. kick-off at Pratt Community College (3-7-0, 5-8-0).
Three-time conference player of the week Rayssa Neres put both of Barton's goals on the board, the first coming just 6:11 in the contest from Laura Maria's 16th assist of the year, with the second coming at the 17:38 mark as Margarita Franco's long pass ended up in the back of the net on Neres' 33rd goal of the year.
Reyna Gonzalez and the Barton defense held Dodge City in check for the first sixty-seven minutes without any shots getting launched. After Head Coach Ousmane Camara took out most of his starting lineup, backup goalkeeper Priscilla Munoz was blitzed the final twenty-three minutes with six shots of frame, rejecting all but Marcela Martinez Coronado's 1v1 shot to the net with 6:02 remaining.
Neres' two goals broke free from Bianca Barron's 2012 single season performance, putting the freshman alone in second place behind Shala Giardini's incredible 58 goals in 2009. The four points also increased Neres' total to 79, tying former Great Bend native's Yesenia Garcia's mark from the 2008 season.
Also making noise on the single season chart, Maria's assist draws within two of Theresa Crane's 2008 total of 18 for the fourth best performance while also tying the 8th best points scored mark of 50 put up in 2008 by Nataleigh Cliff.
