No. 16 Cougars win thirty-eight matches with five placers at UNK Holiday Inn Open #GoBarton

The Barton Community College wrestling program won thirty-eight matches on Saturday as the No. 16 ranked Cougars went 38-31 in the UNK Holiday Inn Open held in Kearney, Nebraska. Having seventeen entries amongst over 800 competitors, the Cougars finished with five in the top six while also earning a distinguished individual award.

Kade Sander notched his second 157 division runner-up finish of the season battling through an injury in finishing 5-1 on the day. Getting a first round bye, Sander piled up the points over Cloud County Community College's Ryan Delforge 18-2 for a technical fall. Locked into a battle in the next round with Adams State's unattached wrestler Gavin Davy, the match came to a screeching halt as both received head lacerations. Through a few more stoppages of play, Sander advanced to the quarterfinal round with a narrow 5-4 decision. Taking care of unattached Tracy Reeder with a 4:29 fall, Sander then blanked his way to the finals with a 6-0 win over Anthony Scantlin of Fort Hays State University. York's Adrian Ojeda then took the title as Sander came up on the short end of 5-2 decision.

The Cougars received another runner-up finish in the 285 division as No. 5 ranked Brix Brickey came up short on the title in a 9-3 decision to Weston Hunt of the Colorado School of Mines. Beginning his day in round two, Brickey pinned four straight opponents in the Lindsborg sophomore's march to the finals. Brickey took care of Austin Lampkin of Nebraska Wesleyan University and New Mexico Highlands' Julian Sanchez in identical 1:59 clockings before making short work of Jacob Feldman from The Mines in 53 seconds. Semifinal action proved to be more difficult with Brickey getting a second period take down over Colorado State University unattached wrestler Gavin Nye in 4:10.

Trent Miles rolled into the 174 division semifinals with a tech fall to go along with two falls totaling eighty-two seconds. Scoring a 16-1 tech fall over Air Force Prep's James Nuhfer, Miles took care of Morningside's Tucker Bassinger in 42 seconds before slapping a 40 second flat backing on Hastings Austin Moyer. Miles' trek through the championship side of the bracket then came to an emphatic end to the eventual champion as Fort Hays' Aryus Jones racked up a 16-0 technical fall. Advancing to the third place match virtue of the six match limit handed to No. 7 ranked Cody Kingery of Iowa Western, Miles bid for a third place finish ended at the 4:04 mark in a fall to The Mines' Anderson Salisbury.

Darion Bailey also had his championship bracket interrupted by the eventual champion but went on to place 5th overall in the 133 division. Pinning New Mexico Highlands' Issac Garcia in the second round in 1:40, Bailey received a forfeit advancement before earning an 8-4 quarterfinal win over Aaron Sistrunk of Minnesota State University Moorhead. Getting bounced to the consolation following a 7-3 loss to Jake Woods of The Mines, Bailey took a late 6:15 fall to Northwestern's Jacob Hergott before being awarded the 5th placing via the six match rule over Bethany College's Trey Edwards.

Another run in the championship bracket came to an end by the eventual champion as Kelton Suchy won rolled into the 165 division semifinals before taking a 1:39 fall to Hayden Hastings of Wyoming. Suchy defeated Morningside's Alias Starkovich on a 4:58 injury stoppage before chalking up a 1:35 fall of Colby's Johnathan Hernandez and a 5:55 clock stoppage with a pin of Shaun Van Der Torre of Hastings. Having been bounced to the consolation side, Suchy got rolled up in the semifinals on a 25-10 tech fall to Newman's Dacota Motter before falling in the fifth place match 8-2 to unattached Hunter Mullin of Western State Colorado University.

Not placing on the day and having a chance ruled out by the six match limit, Keaton Sander's 5-1 day concluded on a positive note as the Great Bend freshman took home the amateur division's "Most Falls Award" after placing four mat slappers on all but one of his 141 division opponents for a total of just 7:37 of match time. Bounced immediately to the consolation side by a 3:52 fall to Iowa Western's Collen Divers, Sander had a bye before stringing four straight falls beginning with a quick 38-second pin of Northwest Kansas Technical College's Jesus Morales. It would take a second period time before Sander could hand a 3:59 clock stoppage on unattached Robert Price of Chadron State but in the next two rounds dished out quick match stoppers in a 1:35 time over Northwestern's Nathan Avant and a 1:25 time to James Brown of Briar Cliff. Into the consolation sixth round, Sander would have his last match of the day with a 6-4 decision over Adams State unattached wrestler Noah Hermosillo as the new six match limit concluded the day as Minnesota State's Mason Schulz was awarded the advancement.

Barton's next competition comes in two weeks as the Cougars will take the Thanksgiving week away from competing before heading to Hays, Kansas, for the Bob Smith Open held Sunday, December 3.
